Super Sonic returns in this game too, but it's not reserved for the final boss. The game also has a much more mature story that sets the atmosphere for most of the game, and fits really well with the theme of the game as well as the overall gameplay.
Sonic has never had this much freedom in a 3D space. The open-zone gameplay makes the Starfall Islands fun to explore and run around.
The main gimmick of the game is clearly the open-zone gameplay though. Cyber Space contains shorter, more linear levels similar to that of games like Sonic Generations. Another thing this game adds is Cyber Space. Sonic Frontiers also added a new combat system, giving the blue blur all-new, exhilarating and satisfying ways to take down foes. This time, Sonic can freely move in all directions rather than just run forward to clear a stage. This allowed the developers to create larger, more open levels for Sonic to run around in. It combines the beloved gameplay style of the Adventure games with the traditional gameplay style of boost games.
